Are You Stuck With A Limited Audience?

I was talking to a friend yesterday and he was talking about her "Regular Blog Readers" and that sparked an interesting question. I asked her how much she thought her blog readership had grown during the last year.

She had a quick look in her AWStats control panel and went very quiet. The truth was that her readership was alomost the same size today as it was in January 2008. She was blogging to the same audiences over and over again.

We then began to discuss how she could break out of this limited pattern and expose her audience to a much wider and yet still targeted audience.

We discussed a few things that she could do to get in front of people who are interested in the topics that she writes about..

So, take a look at your stats right now and see if you are growing your readership and then think about what you can do to get a wider exposure.

Good post John. A lot of people think that if they just keep blogging, eventually something magical will happen and people will start to take notice. I wish it was true, but unfortunately it takes hard work.

Very true John. We must all learn to progress not just because it takes time to grow but also because there are so many changes to consider - some to the good and some to the bad.

@Nathan there's nothing wrong with hard work, especially if you can outsource some of it. ;-)

@Mark it helps if you can differentiate between what's good and what's bad and capitalize on the opportunities.

Completely agree with you John. You cant expect traffic levels to grow. You need to put effort into growing your audience base.
Posting comments, Joining all the social networks, Responding in Forums etc will always help you gain more readers.

There are many plugins that can quickly and dramatically increase the number of regular and loyal commentators in any blog which in turn increases subscribers. I've linked one post that discusses what they are into this comment.

Adding CommentLuv to my blog jumped the average number of comments it receives from 2-3 to 10-15. I am also very active at Twitter and FriendFeed; however, I attribute most of the regular commentators to adding that plug-in.

When you start seeking out related blogs you can maximize the benefits by starting with dofollow blogs. I posted lists of them in a post after the one I've linked above. There are two new search tools mentioned on that page that will be great ways to find dofollow blogs by keyword.

There are other related posts in my blog. They're easy to locate by clicking on the category or sub-category you're interested in.

@ Internet Strategist

I've been using CommentLuv on my http://MarketingConfidential.com/private blog for a while. I don't know why I didn't have installed here! Doh!

Thanks for the reminder.
