Tweeter Getter – Good or Evil
I'm a big fan of Twitter, the massively popular micro blogging platform. I think it offers an excellent opportunity to connect with like minded people.
There are a growing number of applications, user guides and associated products being developed to capitalize on the growing Twitter audience. One of these new developments is Tweeter Getter a multi-level referral system that works virally to grow your follower base.
I happen to think that it's a great idea, I love the concept. I'm a big fan of viral marketing, and I've set up an account to see how it all unfolds.
There is, of course, a downside.
People are already trying too hard… I've received several Direct Messages via Twitter containing Tweeter Getter links. I've decided to un-follow these people and treat messages that contain Tweeter Getter links as DM spam. Quite honestly sending links by DM is a dumb move. A DM is a one-on-one communication. Posting the link into the Twitter Stream, or as a reply, gets your link a much wider exposure.
The other potential problem is that your network of contacts will become diluted in its interests. I want to network with people who have similar interest. Getting followers virally will result in much more randomness and diversity of interests.
So, on balance I'm looking at Tweeter Getter as a viral tool with potential but I have reservations about it being used irresponsibly and the effect it will have on the focus of interests of the members of my network.
Have your say..

Hi John,

I'd agree that sending a Direct message about it to people is a bad thing to do, especially as it's pretty unecessary with som many people re-tweeting it.
I did tweet it to see what would happen and so far I've been remarkably unimpressed with the results…

I am fairly new to Twitter and I LOVE it. Your posts and blog are full of awesome information and shortcuts and I thank you. However, I would think that Twitter Getter would bury me information, much of which I have no interest. Like you, I want to share thoughts with those who have similar interests. Yes, it's nice to get "out there", but isn't making the connections half the fun?

Hi John! How ya doing my man??
I've seen good and bad posts about the application. Seems everybody has their opinion about it. You're the first I've seen so far with a "middle of the road" opinion. Seems like everything else I've seen is on a love it or hate it level.
I've even seen posts where people flat out call it a scam and that the ONLY person getting the followers is the creator.
Don't know where the proof is in that statement but…geeze..it certainly has created an uproar in the Twitter community never the less.
I've seen the argument that you shouldn't focus on the quantity of followers….instead focus on the quality.
I've also seen the argument that it's healthy to get a wide variety of followers. The more people who follow you (if you follow back) the greater perspective you will have of lots of things going on. If you find later that you don't want to follow that "random" person, you can always unfollow.
I think you are doing the right thing. Test, test, test…then come to a conclusion.
Talk to you later John. C ya!!

What people don’t get is that it will actually create more work for them later unfollowing/blocking spam-happy people AND/OR having their tweet stream permanently degraded and thus made nearly useless.
I’ve been collecting my “with friends” stream as RSS into Thunderbird for 1-2 weeks, in order to be able to do some filtering and stats experiments, just to see what’s up. An average of about a mere 800 friends (”following”), many of them quite active, created well over 100,000 tweets!
Now this is hard because I know there are tons of nuggets hidden in there, from high quality/smart/nice people, and yet it’s difficult to find many of them.
Now imagine what happens if you have say 5,000 TweeterGetter ill-gotten spammers in your stream, it becomes completely pointless.
Lastly, people underestimate how much this kind of stuff can hurt their personal brand/social equity: Social context in SM is the key, and many people will react very negatively to perceived violations of social trust. Already, filtering around in my tweet “file” in Thunderbird, I could see 200 tweets “RT’ing” (really deceivingly so) for TG, and I dropped a handful of people who did so more than 2 times.
Others, including some pretty high-profile/”VIP” users, I already have just a bit less respect for now that they’ve outed themselves as not being above participating in a pyramid scheme. Even though many already had all of the followers they ever needed… and/or the means to get more, intelligently.
Remember that through Search.twitter.com, anyone can see if you participated, for good (unless you delete those tweets, which I kind of recommend). Through Google, likely forever. Not smart…
Protect your personal brand and social equity! That’s the only thing you really have on Twitter.

Alex, nobodies twitter stream is going to be clogged up using tweeter getter, the maximum number of people you follow using it is 7, the six above you and me (and following me is optional).
Its a spin off of a very old Mark Joyner viral downline idea, the same type of idea that has built people like John Reese, Mike Filsaime, Gary Ambrose, Mark Joyner and other well knowns massive lists and businesses in the past.
Gary Ambrose said himself if this had been attached to one of the names above it would be getting more support from the vocal minority who are against it.

I have written two articles concerning TweeterGetter so far. The most recent one is about where I think Gary and TweeterGetter will go from here. The other one answers this direct question about whether or not TweeterGetter is evil?

Warning. My first view of #tweetergetter is that it is a very clever social-engineered attempt to harvest Twitter passwords. If any of your readers filled in the form and subscribed, I recommend they change their password immediately.
JaceMan doesn't agree with me.

I wrote about this at another location on the same topic here at the blog.
I disagree that Tweeter Getter doesn’t add value, particularly for those who want to develop more relationships and are looking for some leverage and automation to accomplish it.
As long as you're NOT spamming about it or being obnoxious… Promoting Tweeter Getter respectfully and mindfully isn’t a bad thing in and of itself.
Right now, we all have lots of people regularly choosing to follow us at Twitter. Most of us don’t mind. We rarely know the person who ads themselves to the list… we don't know if they had a good reason to add themselves.
What matters is what we do after someone follows us on Twitter (and what the new follower does). If we engage in conversations, give value after they're on our list, we are using Twitter how it was intended.
For these reasons, I suggest using it if you’re in business. I've written how to go about the correctly and successfully at my blog, which I think there will be a link to here with my name.
Partners in success!
